November 22nd, 1pm : Battlefield 2 v1.12 patch released.

This patch is crazy, it’s a cumulative patch of all the previous patches, plus some extra stuff fixed in the game. The bad part is, it’s 280mb download, that’s just crazy-huge!

The funniest thing is, the patch is released the same day Battlefield 2: Special Forces (the expansion) was released, which after some investigation makes sense. Apparently Special Forces has a bunch of new weapons, etc. to be unlocked.

They also made it backwards compatible! So if you get the unlocks, you can go back and play normal BF2 online and have the new weapons if you unlocked them. Pretty cool if you ask me. There’s also a nice little quirk, if you don’t have SF, you can have someone that does login once, get one point on your account, and bam! Now you have the unlocks too! Go back to your computer, play on your BF2 account with the new unlocks!

The thing I’ve found most amusing about the whole expansion and patch is the version numbers. Up till now, it’s been 1.0, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03. The upgrade “expansion” of Special Forces actually puts it at v1.1. So basically, I look at the Special Forces upgrade as the first “real” patch. Play the game for five minutes after the upgrade, and you’ll see that BF2 is finally at a release stage. I don’t feel like I’m playing on Beta software anymore.
