HD-DVD Attach Rates
In a previous post back in November, I mentioned I try to keep up on what the rest of the world is doing when it comes to HD-DVD, as it is my belief that the rest of the world will equally impact the outcome of HD vs. BRD. I found a really good article from a month ago showing some great statistics:
The article shows is a study done in Europe of the “attach rate” (how many movies sold per player) for HD (including standalone players and game consoles) which indicates that European HD DVD users buy more movies per player than their Blu-ray counterparts.
Some quick highlights from the article:
- Italy: HD DVD owners have bought an average of 4.4 movies each (11 times the Blu-ray figure of 0.4 per player).
- France: HD DVD owners have bought an average of 5 movies each (over 8 times the Blu-ray figure of 0.6 per player).
- Benelux: HD DVD owners have bought an average of 2.9 movies each (over 7 times the 0.4 movies bought by Blu-ray owners)
- Germany: HD DVD owners have bought an average of 2.9 movies each (which is over 4 times the 0.6 movies bought by Blu-ray owners)
- UK: HD DVD owners have bought an average of 3.7 movies each (which is over 4 times the 0.8 movies bought by Blu-ray owners)
Overall, not bad! It looks like really good news for HD DVD, hopefully this trend will continue into the United States.
Have you seen this news about Warner Bros. dropping HD DVD?
I in fact have. It was actually quite a shocking blow.
From what I heard, “inside” sources at WB said that up until THE DAY OF the announcement, internally, the general word was they were going HD-DVD exclusive.
To be honest, I don’t understand why they didn’t remain neutral. It was the best financial decision for the company, as they were getting double the sales of other production companies by selling to both markets.
