In an effort to create a Windows Home Server, I have been looking into various hardware. I’m torn between a couple different types of setups. The main thing I’m looking for, is a way to store hard drives. These are the two I’ve been most realistically looking at, each with their own pro’s and con’s:

The first one is a huge, 8-Bay enclosure. Capable of holding, for what I would use, 8×500gb (4TB) hard drives! This enclosure comes with hot-swappable bays, and would be a great addition to a desktop PC running Windows Home Server.

The second is a SilverStone case, which has a much better WAF, sporting a more A/V look. It has a better footprint, and would be easier to stack multiple of these on a shelf near or on top of the small desktop.

A part of me wouldn’t mind picking up another media-center looking case to be my Windows Home Server, and then stack the SilverStone cases on top of it. At this point though, I realize I am spending extra money just to have it look nicer, and I really have to ask myself — is it worth it?

For some, the easy answer is ‘no.’ Taking into account the WAF, it becomes a little bit more tricky. I’ll think about it for awhile I guess.

Additionally, I found this neat plugin for Windows Home Server called “WebGuide” it’s a port from WebGuide4 for VMC and MC2k5. WebGuide for Windows Home Server enables you to remotely access, listen, watch and stream your music, photos and videos stored on your home server while away from home. Check out the link and view the screenshots for a nice visual description.
