The Golden Army

Tonight Sonja and I went and saw Hellboy: The Golden Army (2008). Mainly we were both looking for an excuse to get out of the house, and hell I was definately ready to take a break from my Case Study assignment, so there was no complaints for me on doing just about anything else.

The first Hellboy movie was mediocere. It wasn’t “bad,” it just wasn’t awesome either. I think I’m a pretty neutral to most movies in fact. It has to be something pretty special to wow me, like V for Vendetta (2005), which when it was over I pretty much had to pick my face up off the floor.

Anyway, as for The Golden Army I had seen quite a few previews that actually made the movie look like it had some potential (Golden Army Trailer). I was particularly fascinated by their evil looking elves, and the way they apparently crossed over into our world.

Ultimately, I found this movie lacking. The scenes from the preview made it seem like there was going to be a build-up to a much bigger conflict with their world vs. ours. Instead, the storyline in the movie took them more into their world rather than ours, which to me just looked like an over-abundant use of CGI when they could have produced a much more interesting effect using less CGI in a more real-world environment.

In any case, I would rate the sequel about on par with the first. It is potentially worth a rent if you like sci-fi/comic book movies, but probably not worth going to the theater for unless you really need an excuse for an outing. In my opinion, wait for The Dark Knight (2008) to fulfill any of those needs.

I rented the first one, and I felt that renting was about as good as it deserved. I’ll probably wait to rent this one, too. Thanks for the heads up.

As an after thought, Dan Overby linked me this:

For some creative commercials, these were seen randomly on television.
