Approximately three weeks ago I stubbed my toe one morning in a hurry to go to work. In the process of doing so, I snapped up my toenail and ripped about two-thirds of the nail up off of the toe. It was not a pleasant experience.
All-in-all, the healing process went pretty well. I had been having my toe taped up for the first week to help keep any sort of infection out, and also to keep pressure on the toenail to keep it hopefully growing back onto my toe.
Then after about a week my toenail seemed to be doing alright. I ended up going out of town for training for work and during that time my toenail had started to develop a small green spot. Something about my toe being green just didn’t seem right, but oh well.
During the week at training the green spot began to get larger and larger. Up until yesterday, I hadn’t done anything about it. But when nearly half of the original area that was lifted up had turned green, Sonja, Seth, Midget, all combined pressured me into going to see the doctor.
The doctor’s visit went fine. I had a lot of waiting. It took a solid 20 minutes of filling out forms and copying insurance information. Updating addresses, apparently they had my address from about 1992. Apparently I do not go to the doctor enough.
When I finally got into to see someone, I was first stuck with a nurse lady who started wasting more time asking more questions that weren’t really useful. Seriously, how it happened? Does it matter? It was three weeks ago. The damage is done. It’s not like the scenario is close to anything bad. “Oh no, spousal abuse. She ripped up my toenail on purpose as torture!” Really? Come’on.
Anyway, eventually she got a real doctor to come take a look at my toe. Who then consulted with another doctor. After some diddle-dallying they all came to the conclusion that my toe is fine and that I should do nothing. Currently they feel that the green that is growing in my toe is not any sort of infection or fungus or anything gross, but simply the color my toenail turned from having the blood clot up under my toe. However, only time will tell as they can’t really get to far under my toenail to see what is really there.
So basically, I get to wait and see.
In the mean time, they attempted to cut off as much of toenail as they could to get a better look, which didn’t really accomplish anything. Then, this morning when I am trying to shower, I now have stinging pain as the water hits my unsheltered toe, because there is now a missing third of a toenail.
Yay!
damn the physicians!
Another victory for medical science.
