A few of our recent projects at work have been utilizing the Oracle User Productivity Kit. It is definitely not the most exciting of work, but it does pay the bills, and it sure beats flipping burgers! I will admit though, when I first heard of UPK, I am fairly certain that the first thing running through my head was,”Oh no! Not another acronym!”

Oracle’s User Productivity Kit (UPK) is an eLearning tool that can be used to record steps and play back the steps in exact sequence in various interactive modes, such as See It Mode, Try It Mode, Know It Mode, and Do It Mode.

What makes UPK unique, compared to other screen capture tools (Viewlet Builder, Captivate) is its ability to display appropriate text, such as menu and menu item names captured during the recording.

UPK basically helps us to document business processes based on recording screen interactions with the user, and can be used as a documentation aid during the UAT and Training stages of an implementation.

Now if that doesn’t sound exciting, I don’t know what will! What people may find exciting though, is knowing that UPK work can easily pay $55,000 - $90,000 a year! That is some excellent starting pay for any career! What is even better is that the more I have researched it, the more I have been finding that there is some true demand out there for UPK work. For those that do not mind jumping around from project to project doing consulting work, there is some real potential in being a UPK Developer.

I’m not sure what it took, but you made the UPK sound half exciting.
