In my previous jobs, we have used SharePoint Server randomly at some point here or there. The product boasts that it is “a suite of server capabilities that can help improve organizational effectiveness by providing comprehensive content management and enterprise search, accelerating shared business processes, and facilitating information-sharing.” To be honest, it has been quite useful as a document repository. Other than that, it’s pretty difficult for a small business to make use of a lot of the other features.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been setting up a new SharePoint server for my most recent company that I am working with. I took a little bit more time with this install than I did with our previous ones and actually set up several sub-sites in advance. I am hoping that this site will be utilized well, but only time will tell.

    so what is the result?

@Andy That’s not totally true. I still think it’s a great file repository. So at least it’s solid at it’s primary task. It just fails at everything else.

@Hament So far.. the result has been about as expected. The site has sat vacant for 2 days.

At least there has been ‘discussion’ about the site and talk of using it soon, but nothing yet.

Everyone agrees it’ll make a great place to store information, just no one (other than me) has bothered to use it.

We have begun using it at work. To really harness the power, I think Office 2007 is a must. We use the tasks pretty religiously, and the calendars. Plus you can write custom apps for it, which we did for our Time Off Requester page. But beyond that, it’s largely just a glorified document repository.
