About a week ago I wrote about how at work we have a dedicated Fax Server using HylaFax and Sendmail running on Ubuntu Linux. I had a couple requests to create a small diagram of how it’s all setup.

We have unlimited free VoIP lines with our arrangement at work, so we the setup uses a Cisco ATA 186 to convert one of the VoIP lines to an analog signal which then connects to the Fax Server. Upon receiving a Fax Server, the Fax Server relays using the internal corporate e-mail server to send a copy of the received fax to the desired inbox based on a set of rules that dictates which phone numbers should be delivered where.

Alternatively, you can send faxes using the internal e-mail server to <fax.number>@faxserv and it will automatically attach a corporate cover page filling out the information based on your user, and send the fax to the desired number.

It is a very slick setup that gets the job done.

The diagram is nothing fancy, as the entire setup is actually pretty simple (which is why it works so well). However, here is a quick little Visio diagram to illustrate the setup:
