Repetitive task is repetitive

2009/01/22

We have a database that stores all the little details about how utilized our network is.  It has information at 5 minute averages, 1 hour averages, and 1 day averages.  The software that does this is supposed to keep only 3 months worth of 5 minute data, 6 months worth of hourly, and a year worth of daily.  You’d think that since the feature shipped with the initial product that by version 5 it would work.

It doesn’t.

So here I sit going through table by table looking at the definition of the table, finding what the timestamp column is named and telling the table to delete everything more recent than a certain second.  This task is not hard, this task is boring though.  Someone email me some sudoku’s.

I’ve had an iPod nano nearly since they came out.  Its been quite the reliable little device over the years.  Unfortunately it is becoming less so :(

When listening to music or podcasts my ipod has develop a bit of a sniffle I guess, it randomly after an hour or so of playing will start to skip.  This is annoying but I’ll live with it for awhile.  Maybe thismeans an iPod touch or some such in the future :)

Potential Desktop Parts v Seth

2009/01/19

With Mike making his post on potential mATX parts I thought I’d reopen my parts wish list that I made back around christmas.  It has a slightly different goal at this point but same components.

The purpose is would be to get rid of my old(semi-broken) dell optiplex linux desktop, and windows home server(amd 3400+ from around 2005) and consolidate them on a machine nice enough that I could make these VMs,  do work’ish stuff, and play some non cutting edge games.

Now that I’m looking more into server 2008 I will have to confirm what hardware works best with hyper-v though.

Brrrrr

2009/01/15

So, -10 degrees with -40 windchill.  In all honesty it doesn’t feel any more cold than -5 did to me.  Really I think its kind of a deadzone feeling wise from 0 degrees to spit goes clink.

Well, there is one difference.  When it gets this cold out a lot of people quit talking about the weather because its simply cold.  Too cold to snow prevents them from going “so ya think we’re getting snow tonight?”

Aaaand for warm thoughts JT sent me a link to this.  It is quite possibly the closest thing to a suicide booth from futurama I have seen thus far.

Winter Rules

2009/01/13

This is directed at the 12 vehicles who drove past 6 or 7 of us waiting to cross the street last night after work.  Please quickly DIAF

When its -20 wind chill and you’re in a car approaching a cross walk, freaking stop for the people standing outdoors so that they can also get in their cars.  Its common courtesy and quite frankly most suck at it.

That is all </bitter>

Never Buy Sonicwall

2009/01/06

I’ve spent the better part of 2 weeks dealing with what I can only describe as the worst support in existance.  Its more annoying than when Juniper sends the wrong power supplies and refuses to replace them with the right ones.

If you invest your money in sonicwall prepare for support that refuses to work with you by having things ready in an easy prepared fashion.  They’ll want you to conference two other people onto the phone wasting your resources while they blindly guess at what is wrong with their appliances and software.
