The Day Seven Monsters Turned 17 in Bangkok

Lame title… I know.

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008): I have not seen the 1950′s version of this film so I cannot comment on the similarities or differences, but I really enjoyed the remake.  It’s a sci-fi film about an alien that lands on Earth to decide the fate of mankind.  The underlying message surrounds the damage human beings are inflicting upon our planet.  The question is, is one advanced species worth a planet?  The original consensus was no.  Orbes that are implanted on Earth call out to various animal species around the globe and serve as a type of “Noah’s Ark.”  Once the collection is complete the annihilation of humans begins, but a mother and her son are able to convince the alien visitor, Klaatu, that human kind is compassionate and capable of change, or at the very least, are special enough to deserve a try.  So shape up world… or a bunch of metal bugs will consume us all!!!
  • Seven Pounds (2008): A lot of people say you can’t discuss this movie because you’ll reveal to much of the plot line and destroy the mystery, but personally, I figured out the storyline about 15 minutes into the film.  Never-the-less, it was a fantastic story and worth watching.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens (2009): Mike and I went to see this film with Mr. Dan on Easter.  I really enjoyed the story and felt that a lot of adult humor was slipped into the dialogue, which was fun.  The film follows a group of monsters, quarantined by the government, as they fight off an alien threat for their freedom.  The animation was great, apart from the eyes of the human characters.  I felt they were to large.  I realize this was the effect the animators were going for, but it was a bit distracting at first.  Anyway… was their an underlying plot… maybe acceptance of diversity?  Even if there was no message, it was good, go see it.
  • 17 Again (2009):  This past weekend my sisters-in-law and I gathered for a movie outing.  And yes, this is the film they picked.  Hehe.  Anyway, the movie follows Mike O’Donnell, a high school superstar whose prime was cut short by an unexpected pregnancy.  He gives up a chance at a scholarship for basketball to marry his girlfriend.  Several years in the future he resents her for the opportunities he missed and is given the chance to relive his glory days.  He falls into a time warp of some kind and reverts to his 17 year old self.  He comes to feel his journey is not about himself but to help his two kids through their struggles and put his family back on track.  The movie was fun to watch because he gets into precarious situations and doesn’t respond as a 17 year old would, rather he talks like and does things a 40 year old would do.  Also, his interactions with his wife are quite amusing as she has no idea it’s him, she just sees an uncanny resemblance.  His adult best friend pretends to be his father and also provides quite a bit of humor.  You may find the flick to be worth watching, but I’d wait for the rental.
  • Bangkok Dangerous (2008): Oh Nicholas Cage… :)   This is another typical film for the actor.  The story is about a hit-man who is itching to get out of the business but wants to complete one final job to get that last large sum of money.  He has several rules that he abides by in order to be successful in his profession.  Of course, he breaks many of them in the final days of hit-manhood and finds himself in several difficult situations.  As I am not hard to please, I liked the movie.  I truly didn’t mind the ending to the story, but I don’t feel they ended the movie well… if that makes sense?  The final shots had no wrap up for me, they were just sort of there.

One Response to “The Day Seven Monsters Turned 17 in Bangkok”

  1. So, we rented Seven Pounds the other night, and I enjoyed it, but it was definitely different. I must say, do NOT rent The Boy in the Striped Pajamas though without a full box of Kleenex and Mike available for hugging. Wow. I need to not pick movies while pregnant. I really want to see 17 Again…I’ll probably have to wait until I’m hanging out with or get my YL girls to go with me. :)
